The OV2640 2-megapixel camera is a CMOS image sensor with a resolution of 1632×1232 pixels. Despite its small size and low operating voltage, it delivers all the capabilities of a single-chip UXGA camera and image processor. This module uses an SCCB interface (similar to I²C) for internal configuration and allows the reception of sampled 10-bit data in full-frame, sub-sampling, and windowing modes.
The maximum frame rate of the OV2640 camera at UXGA resolution (1632×1232) reaches 15 frames per second, giving users full control over image quality, data format, and transmission method. Additionally, this module supports various image output formats, including RAW RGB, YUV/YCbCr 4:2:2, RGB565/555/444, and GRB 4:2:2, making it ideal for diverse image processing and machine vision applications.
For image processing, this compact camera module features an advanced internal image processing system that includes capabilities such as gamma correction, white balance adjustment, saturation adjustment, color correction, noise reduction, and dead pixel correction. These features ensure that the output images are of high quality with low noise.
Hardware-wise, this module operates at a voltage between 1.7V and 3.3V and has an internal LDO (Low-Dropout Regulator) to supply the 1.2V core. Its power consumption is very low, drawing less than 20μA in Sleep mode. The standard lens has a Field of View (FOV) of 70 degrees, and the sensor's pixel size is 2.2µm × 2.2µm. The signal-to-noise ratio is 40dB, the dynamic range is 50dB, and the flat cable length is 20mm. This module utilizes advanced OmniVision technology, which employs image processing algorithms to reduce issues like Fixed Pattern Noise (FPN), tailing, floating noise, and other image distortions, delivering clear, stable, and high-quality color images.
Given its small dimensions, low power consumption, and compatibility with various outputs, the inexpensive OV2640 camera module is an ideal choice for embedded systems projects, computer vision, the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, video surveillance, and facial recognition systems. Furthermore, this module is well-compatible with microcontrollers like the ESP32 and Arduino, enabling developers to connect the OV2640 to Arduino and ESP32.
