NodeMCU is an open-source IoT platform. ESP32 is a series of low cost, low power system-on-chip (SoC) microcontrollers with integrated Wi-Fi and dual-mode Bluetooth.
The ESP32 series employs a Tensilica Xtensa LX6 microprocessor in both dual-core and single-core variations, with a clock rate, up to 240 MHz. It is designed to achieve the best power and RF performance, showing robustness, versatility and reliability in a wide variety of applications.
ESP32 is highly integrated with built-in antenna switches, RF balun, power amplifier, low-noise receive amplifier, filters and power management modules.
It features all the state-of-the-art characteristics of low-power chips, including fine-grained clock gating, multiple power modes, and dynamic power scaling. For instance, in a low-power IoT sensor hub application scenario, ESP32 is woken up periodically and only when a specified condition is detected. A low-duty cycle is used to minimize the amount of energy that the chip expends. The output of the power amplifier is also adjustable, thus contributing to an optimal trade-off between communication range, data rate and power consumption.
