MPS20N0040D 40kPa Differential Pressure Sensor – DIP-6, Piezoresistive

The MPS20N0040D is a piezoresistive differential pressure sensor designed to measure pressures in the 0 to 40 kPa range (approximately 0 to 5.8 PSI, or 0.4 atm). It is housed in a standard DIP-6 through-hole package with dual barbed pressure ports, making it suitable for breadboard prototyping and integration into compact PCB assemblies. The sensor is widely used in medical blood pressure monitors, industrial pneumatic controls, environmental monitoring, and automotive pressure sensing applications.

The sensing element is a MEMS piezoresistive Wheatstone bridge fabricated on a silicon diaphragm. When differential pressure is applied across the two ports, the diaphragm deflects and changes the resistance of the bridge, producing a differential millivolt output proportional to the applied pressure. The full-scale output voltage is specified as 50 to 100 mV, and the sensor requires a 5V DC supply (operating range 2.6–5.5V per some sources). The bridge impedance is 4–6 kΩ, and the device offers a linearity of ±0.3% F.S. (some sources state ±0.25% FS) with a hysteresis of ±0.7% F.S. The maximum overpressure capability is three times the measuring range (up to 120 kPa).

The MPS20N0040D is a bare sensor element—it produces a low-level analog output that requires external amplification and analog-to-digital conversion before it can be read by a microcontroller. It is commonly paired with the HX710B 24-bit ADC module, which provides a complete amplified and digitized pressure-sensing solution. The sensor operates over a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and is compatible with clean, dry, non-corrosive gases. Its compact 15 × 10 × 12 mm body and 2.54mm pin pitch make it easy to integrate into custom pressure-sensing designs.
