The DFRobot 3D gesture sensor module is an interactive sensor that integrates 3D gesture recognition and motion tracking based on the MGC3130 chip from Microchip. It utilizes Microchip's patented GestIC® electric near-field sensing technology, which detects disturbances in the electric field caused by hand or finger movement in free space. The module can recognize clockwise and counterclockwise rotation gestures, directional swipes, and proximity movement, enabling intuitive touchless user interaction.
The effective gesture detection range is approximately 5 cm, while proximity sensing extends up to 10 cm from the sensing surface. With a spatial resolution of 150 dpi, the sensor accurately tracks subtle finger movements. The MGC3130 controller features an embedded Colibri Gesture Suite that runs on-chip, eliminating the need for host intelligence or additional processing resources. This makes the module suitable for embedded systems and IoT prototypes.
The module communicates via an I2C interface with a default address of 0x42, and operates on a wide supply voltage range of 3.3V to 5V. The gesture sensor can be used in applications such as wireless speakers, light switches, remote controls, and interactive displays. The MGC3130 is a single-chip solution optimized for embedded usage, with field-upgradable firmware to accommodate additional gesture algorithms as they become available. The module measures 72mm × 54mm and operates within a temperature range of -20°C to +85°C.
