The AMS1117-2.5 is a fixed-output, low-dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator that delivers a stable 2.5V output from an input supply with a minimum of external components. As a member of the AMS1117 series, it is designed to provide up to 1A of output current, making it suitable for powering low-voltage digital and analog circuits, sensors, and embedded subsystems that require a well-regulated 2.5V rail. The device operates with a low dropout voltage—typically around 1.3V at full load—allowing it to maintain regulation even when the input voltage is only slightly higher than the output.
The AMS1117-2.5 voltage regulator is housed in the compact SOT-223 surface-mount package, which offers a good balance between thermal performance and board space. On-chip precision trimming holds the output voltage within ±2% over the specified operating conditions. The AMS1117-2.5 also integrates internal current limiting and thermal shutdown protection, helping to safeguard the device and the surrounding circuitry under fault conditions such as overload or excessive junction temperature. A minimum output capacitor of 10µF (tantalum or equivalent) is recommended to ensure stability and improve transient response. With a quiescent current of approximately 2mA and a maximum input voltage typically rated at 15V to 18V (depending on the manufacturer’s variant), this regulator is well suited for post-regulation in switching power supplies, battery-powered instruments, and general-purpose linear power stages.
