The GY-30 is a digital ambient light sensor module built around the ROHM BH1750FVI IC, designed to measure illuminance directly in lux without the complex analog calculations required by photoresistors or photodiodes. Its spectral response is closely matched to the human eye, with minimal influence from infrared radiation, so the readings correspond well to perceived brightness rather than raw optical power. The module covers a measurement range of 1 to 65,535 lux with a resolution of 1 lux, and its built-in 16-bit analog-to-digital converter outputs the lux value digitally over an I2C interface.
The GY-30 BH1750FVI light sensor IC itself operates from a 2.4V to 3.6V supply, but the GY-30 breakout board includes an onboard voltage regulator and level shifting that allow the module to be powered from 3V to 5V and connected directly to both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers. The module also supports a power-down function for low-current standby and includes 50Hz/60Hz light noise rejection to suppress flicker from artificial lighting. Two selectable I2C slave addresses are available via the ADDR pin, allowing two BH1750 devices to share the same bus. The board measures approximately 32mm × 15mm and weighs about 2–3g, making it easy to embed in compact enclosures.
The GY-30 is a digital sensor module—it outputs a lux value, not a raw analog voltage—so no calibration resistor or ADC channel is required on the host side. This makes it a practical choice for automatic display brightness control, smart home lighting automation, weather stations, and any project that needs quantitative light-level data rather than a simple dark/light threshold.
