The TLP281-4CH is a four-channel optocoupler module built around the Toshiba TLP281-4, a quad-channel phototransistor-output photocoupler in a compact 16-pin SOP package. Each channel consists of a gallium arsenide infrared emitting diode optically coupled to a silicon phototransistor, providing galvanic isolation between the input and output sides of a circuit. This isolation allows low-voltage microcontrollers, sensors, and logic circuits to interface safely with higher-voltage systems, noisy industrial environments, or circuits at different ground potentials without risk of damage or signal corruption.
The module exposes four independent input channels and four independent output channels on its headers, with the input side driven by an LED forward current of up to 50mA per channel and the output side capable of switching up to 80V DC at a collector current of up to 50mA. The minimum isolation voltage is 2500Vrms, providing robust protection against voltage spikes and ground loops in demanding environments. The current transfer ratio (CTR) is specified as 50% minimum for the standard grade and 100% minimum for the GB grade, ensuring reliable signal transmission across the isolation barrier.
A key design consideration is that the output is a phototransistor with an open collector-emitter, not a digital push-pull output. This means the output requires an external pull-up resistor and the load to be connected between the collector and a positive supply, with the emitter tied to ground. This configuration provides flexibility for interfacing with different logic levels (3.3V, 5V, 12V, 24V) and allows the module to be used for both signal isolation and low-power switching. The module operates across a wide temperature range of -55°C to +100°C and measures just 25mm × 26mm, making it suitable for compact embedded designs, industrial control panels, and DIY automation projects. It is particularly useful for voltage level conversion, noisy circuit isolation, digital input protection, and ground loop breaking in Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and PLC-based systems.
