Description: 
The device features advanced Proximity measurement, Digital Ambient Light Sensing (ALS) and Color Sensing (CRGB).
The slim module incorporates an IR LED and an LED driver which is factory calibrated. The proximity detection allows a large dynamic range of operation for accurate distance detection. For example, it can be used to enable a mobile phone to detect when the user positions the device close to their ear by photodiode detection of reflected IR energy (sourced by the integrated LED). The IR LED sink current is factory-trimmed to provide consistent proximity response without requiring customer calibrations. An internal state machine provides the ability to put the device into a low power state between proximity and RGBC measurements, providing very low average power consumption. The color sensing is greatly useful such as LED RGB backlight control, solid-state lighting, reflected LED color sampler and fluorescent light color temperature detection.
The integrated IR blocking filter also makes the APDS-9950 an excellent ambient light sensor and color temperature monitor sensor.
Detect or release events are interrupt-driven, and occur when proximity result crosses upper and/or lower threshold settings. The proximity engine featured by offset adjustment registers, to compensate unwanted IR energy reflection at the sensor. Proximity results are further improved by automatic ambient light subtraction. The Color and ALS detection features provide red, green, blue and clear light intensity data. Each of the C, R, G, B channels have a UV and IR blocking filters and a dedicated data converter producing 16-bit data simultaneously. 
This architecture allows applications to accurately measure ambient light and sense color which lets devices calculate illuminance and color temperature, control display backlight, and chromaticity.
