The GY-511 is a 3-axis compass module built around the LSM303DLHC system-in-package from STMicroelectronics, which integrates a 3D digital linear acceleration sensor and a 3D digital magnetic sensor into a single compact device. This module is designed to provide accurate orientation and heading information for a wide range of electronic projects. The accelerometer offers user-selectable full-scale ranges of ±2g, ±4g, ±8g, and ±16g, while the magnetometer provides selectable full-scale ranges from ±1.3 to ±8.1 gauss, allowing flexible adaptation to different application requirements.
The LSM303DLHC includes an I2C serial bus interface that supports both standard mode at 100 kHz and fast mode at 400 kHz, making it straightforward to connect with popular microcontroller platforms such as Arduino boards via the SCL and SDA pins. The module operates on a supply voltage of 3V to 5V and features 16-bit data output for high-resolution measurements. The sensor operates reliably across an extended temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, ensuring stable performance in demanding environments.
This compass module is particularly well-suited for building tilt-compensated compasses, where the accelerometer data is used to correct the magnetometer readings for tilt, resulting in accurate heading information regardless of the device orientation. The LSM303DLHC also includes advanced features such as embedded FIFO, a temperature sensor, 6D/4D orientation detection, and two independent programmable interrupt generators for free-fall and motion detection. The module measures 20.5mm × 14.5mm, making it compact enough for integration into portable and embedded designs.
