The TCS34725 RGB color sensor module is a high-sensitivity, low-cost color recognition sensor built around the TCS34725 chip from ams-OSRAM. This module provides a digital return of red, green, blue (RGB), and clear light sensing values through an I2C interface, making it an ideal solution for accurate color measurement and classification in embedded systems. The onboard IR blocking filter is tailored to the color sensor photodiodes and minimizes the infrared spectral component of incoming light, enabling accurate color measurements even under varying lighting conditions and behind attenuating materials such as dark glass.
The TCS34725 RGB light sensor features an impressive 3,800,000:1 dynamic range and four independent analog-to-digital converters, with 16-bit resolution per channel. The device includes a reference channel (clear channel photodiode) for color analysis, which provides a reference allowing for isolation of color content. This color sensor module operates on a wide supply voltage of 3.3V to 5V and is compatible with popular microcontroller platforms including Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and STM32.
The module supports I2C fast mode communication at data rates up to 400 kHz and includes a programmable interrupt output with adjustable upper and lower thresholds. The onboard fill-light LED is adjustable in brightness via PWM, ensuring the sensor can operate normally under low ambient light conditions. The module features a 7-pin interface including VCC, GND, SCL, SDA, INT, and LED pins, with 2.54mm pin pitch for easy integration into breadboards and custom PCBs.
