The AMS1117-1.2 is a low dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator designed to provide a stable 1.2V fixed output voltage from an input supply of up to 18V. Part of the AMS1117 series, this regulator can deliver up to 1A of output current and is housed in the industry-standard SOT-223 power package. Unlike PNP-type regulators where up to 10% of the output current is wasted as quiescent current, the quiescent current of the AMS1117 enters the load, resulting in improved efficiency and reduced power loss during operation.
The AMS1117-1.2 features on-chip precision trimming that adjusts the reference/output voltage to within ±2%, ensuring accurate and consistent voltage regulation for sensitive electronic circuits. On-chip thermal limiting provides protection against overload conditions and excessive junction temperatures, safeguarding both the regulator and the connected load. The device requires a minimum output capacitor of 10µF tantalum for improved transient response and stability, and the dropout voltage is typically 1.1V at 1A load.
This voltage regulator IC is widely used for voltage regulation in electronic circuits, power supply for microcontrollers and other low-voltage devices, post-regulation for switching DC/DC converters, and general-purpose voltage regulation in embedded systems. With an operating junction temperature range of -40°C to +125°C and a maximum input voltage of 18V, the AMS1117-1.2 performs reliably in demanding environments. The component is available in a pack of 5 pieces, making it convenient for prototyping, production, and repair applications.
